Building Inclusive Workplaces in Essex, Suffolk & Hertfordshire for National Inclusion Week

Inclusive workplaces in Essex, Suffolk, and Hertfordshire are key to supporting young people and building stronger communities.

This year, National Inclusion Week (15th–21st September) carries the theme “Now is the Time”. A call to action for everyone to move beyond words and take practical steps towards real inclusion. We’re joining the conversation, focusing on how inclusion shapes futures, workplaces, and local communities across our region.

What Is National Inclusion Week and Why Does It Matter Here?

National Inclusion Week, led by Inclusive Employers, is a UK-wide campaign dedicated to celebrating inclusion and inspiring action in workplaces. It’s about making sure everyone; regardless of background, ability, age, or identity, feels valued and able to thrive.

For our region, inclusion isn’t just a “nice to have.” It’s essential for growing resilient local economies, supporting young people, and ensuring that every individual can harvest their future right here in the South East and East Anglia.

Why Inclusion Matters for Young People and Employers

Inclusion means having access to fair opportunities, being able to bring your whole self to work or study, and knowing your voice matters. According to Inclusive Employers, practical steps; like reviewing recruitment practices, providing flexible work, and listening to diverse voices make a real difference.

Common Barriers and How We Can Overcome Them

Double Prejudice:

Research shows that disabled and older workers often face “double prejudice”. Being overlooked due to both age and disability (HR Grapevine). For young people, similar challenges can show up around neurodiversity, mental health, or being “different” in any way.

Action Steps:

  • Education & Awareness: National Inclusion Week offers resources and workshops to help everyone understand intersectionality and challenge unconscious bias (Inclusive Employers).
  • Allyship: Inclusion is a daily practice. Small actions—like using inclusive language, making spaces accessible, and being an active ally—add up (Travel Hands).
  • Community Initiatives: Local groups, sports clubs (England Netball), and businesses are running events, panels, and campaigns to open up conversations and share best practice.

Inclusion in Action

A Hertfordshire-based SME recently revamped their recruitment process, removing degree requirements and offering flexible working. The result? More diverse applicants and a stronger team culture.

Organisations like Retail Trust and Trading Standards provide toolkits and campaigns to help businesses make inclusion part of everyday practice.

Get Involved:

  • Attend a local Inclusion Week event or join an online workshop (Inclusive Employers Events).
  • Encourage your school, college, or employer to mark the week; host a panel, start a conversation, or share your story.
  • Explore awareness campaigns and resources from London Assembly and others.

How You Can Take Action For Inclusive Workplaces. This Week and Beyond

For Young People

Use your voice to share ideas and experiences—your perspective matters.

For Employers & Community Leaders

Review your policies and recruitment for hidden barriers.
Make your spaces and communications accessible to all.

For Everyone

Inclusion is a journey, not a destination.
