Unlock Your Hidden Strengths. Young People - You Are Stronger Than You Think

October is here, and at inyourroots®, we’re kicking off a new monthly theme uncovering hidden strengths with: “Stronger Than You Think.”

It’s more than a hashtag, it’s a message we want every young person to hear, believe, and carry with them.

Let’s be real, the world can feel overwhelming right now. If you’re aged 16–25, you’ve probably been told to “hustle harder,” “stand out,” or “find your passion”, all while juggling studies, side jobs, and life’s curveballs.

But here’s the truth: you already have strengths that go way beyond your grades or your CV. Maybe you’re the friend everyone trusts, the creative problem-solver, the one who always gets back up after a knock. That’s real strength.

And yet, so many young people don’t see it in themselves. We’re here to change that.

What Are Hidden Strengths?

Hidden strengths are the qualities you might not even realise you have, because they don’t always show up on a CV or in exam results. They’re the things you do naturally, often without thinking, that make a real difference at work, in your community, or among your friends.

You might not give yourself credit for these skills, but employers and communities value them hugely. In fact, the Youth Voice Census shows that strengths like teamwork (64%) and creativity (60%) are on the rise among young people, these are exactly the qualities that open doors.

But hidden strengths go way beyond the usual “soft skills.” Here are some you might not have considered:

Making People Laugh: Lightening the mood and helping teams bond.
Spotting What’s Missing: Noticing gaps, forgotten details, or when someone’s feeling left out.
Remembering the Little Things: Birthdays, coffee orders, or small details that make others feel valued.
Staying Calm When Others Panic: Keeping a level head when things go sideways, even if you’re nervous inside.
Mediating Arguments: Quietly helping people find common ground or smoothing over disagreements.
Learning From Mistakes (and Owning Up): Admitting when you’re wrong and actually changing because of it.
Being the “Go-To” for Random Help: People ask you for advice, tech help, or to fix things, even if it’s not your job.
Spotting Trends Early: Noticing new music, fashion, or tech before everyone else.
Turning Boredom Into Fun: Making dull tasks or awkward situations more interesting for everyone.
Finding Freebies/Deals: Always knowing where to get the best discount, free event, or hack for saving money.
Making New People Feel Welcome: Including newcomers or helping them settle in, even if you’re not the “official” host.
Keeping Secrets/Trustworthiness: Friends confide in you because they know you won’t gossip.
Turning Awkward Moments Into Jokes: Diffusing embarrassment or tension by laughing at yourself.
Being “Low-Key” Reliable: People don’t notice you’re always prepared until something goes wrong and you save the day.
Remembering Names Instantly: Making people feel seen and important from the start.
Being Comfortable With Silence: Knowing when not to fill every gap with chatter.
Spotting When Someone Needs a Break: Sensing burnout or stress before it’s obvious to others.
Getting Stuff Done Without Drama: Quietly finishing tasks, even if you don’t get credit.

Take a moment to think: what’s a hidden strength you’ve shown recently?

Maybe you helped a friend through a rough patch, figured out how to juggle work and college, or stayed calm under pressure. These are all signs of real strength, even if you’ve never called them that before.

What to Expect This Month

All through October, we’ll be shining a light on the hidden strengths that make you, you.

At inyourroots®, we believe hidden strengths for young people are the key to thriving in work, education, and life. We’ll be sharing stories, busting myths, and dropping practical advice on how to turn your strengths into real opportunities; whether that’s in work, education, or your community.

From Monday 6th to Sunday 12th October, inyourroots® is taking over your feed. All week, we’ll be showcasing the latest results from the Youth Voice Census alongside the Gatsby Benchmarks, sparking open conversations about what’s really happening for young people, and what good careers support should look like.

Each day, we’ll break down key stats, challenge outdated myths, and highlight real stories from our community. Our goal? To spotlight the gaps, celebrate hidden strengths, and show how inyourroots® is driving practical change, helping every young person find meaningful opportunities that match who they are and where they want to go.

And we’re not stopping there, World Mental Health Day is coming up, and we’ll be making sure your wellbeing is front and centre.
